Following an initial feasibility study, the City of Bunbury engaged a collaborative team to develop a concept design for Bunbury Ocean Pool. Bunbury Back Beach has a long and rich history of leisure and recreation. The remnant walls of former Ocean Baths remain to the north of the new proposed ocean pool and former Basalt quarry is also located in the dunes. Adjacent to this is a significant Aboriginal site at Wardandi Memorial Park.

The proposed ocean pool celebrates and acknowledges the history of the area. Embedded into an existing channel cut into the rock platform, it re-forms the continuous edge where land meets the ocean. The pool affords a protected swimming enclosure on the open coast for the City of Bunbury including lap lanes, a children’s pool and swimming areas for recreation, rehabilitation and leisure.'

In early 2023 the City of Bunbury endorsed the Concept Design and is now seeking funding opportunities including from State and Federal governments, and private investment with the project estimated at $17.82 million plus additional ongoing yearly operational and maintenance costs.
